The exterior was smoothed out for a sleeker design.
There was now more space in the cabin for passengers, which increased comfort. The second generation Grand Cherokee saw some changes to the interior and exterior. This included a 5.2-liter V-8, 5.9-liter V-8 and a 2.5-liter turbo diesel. The Grand Cherokee was only available as a 4.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine with 190 horsepower, though before the first generation ended in 1998, there would be three other engines added to the lineup.
However, due to its continued success and the takeoff of the Grand Cherokee, Jeep kept both SUVs on the market. When the Jeep Grand Cherokee first entered the SUV market back in 1993, it was expected to take the place of the Cherokee, which had been successful for a decade.
